公元1558年，奥斯曼阿尔及利亚帕夏哈桑（著名的巴巴罗萨·海雷丁之子）奉奥斯曼皇帝之命入侵西班牙王国的附庸国摩洛哥。
哈桑首先率领舰队占领了当时被西班牙统治的撒丁岛的首府、港口卡利亚里。
由于撒丁岛位置敏感，这一军事行动引起了法国和意大利诸城邦国的高度重视。为了摸清奥斯曼的作战对象是谁，法国派出了一个间谍团队，伪装成比萨共和国的商船，驶往撒丁岛刺探军情。
在曲意逢迎下，间谍团获得了宴请哈桑的机会。间谍团的团长在逃回西班牙的撒丁岛领主的私人花园里偶然发现了刚从南美引进不久的观赏植物“狼桃”。博闻强记的团长认为这种植物是有毒的，于是临时决定用“狼桃”毒杀哈桑——无论成功失败，都可以嫁祸给法国的宿敌——教皇国及意大利诸国。于是随后的宴会上，被雇用的托斯卡纳厨师在传统的奶酪薄饼上浇上了大量的狼桃汁。
其实所谓狼桃就是番茄，当然是无毒的。哈桑吃过后，竟然赞不绝口，招来团长询问这种美食的名字。团长没忘记自己伪装的身份，随口回答“比萨饼”。
摸清哈桑的军事目标是西班牙之后，间谍团功成身退返回法国，假装什么事也没发生。
而这种料理的做法被厨师带回意大利，就形成了今天的批萨。

Foods similar to pizza have been made since the neolithic age. Records of people adding other ingredients to bread to make it more flavorful can be found throughout ancient history. The ancient Greeks covered their bread with oils, herbs and cheese,[14] and in the 6th century BC, the soldiers in Persian King Darius I armies baked flatbreads with cheese and dates on top of their battle shields.[15][16]
Modern pizza evolved from similar flatbread dishes in Naples, Italy in the 18th or early 19th century.[17] Prior to that time, flatbread was often topped with ingredients such as garlic, salt, lard, cheese, and basil. A popular contemporary legend holds that the archetypal pizza, pizza Margherita, was invented in 1889, when the Royal Palace of Capodimonte commissioned the Neapolitan pizzaiolo (pizza maker) Raffaele Esposito to create a pizza in honor of the visiting Queen Margherita. Of the three different pizzas he created, the Queen strongly preferred a pizza swathed in the colors of the Italian flag: red (tomato), green (basil), and white (mozzarella). Supposedly, this kind of pizza was then named after the Queen as “Pizza Margherita”,[18] although recent research casts doubt on this legend.[19]
